San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, located on the Sea of Cortez, is one of the finest places in the world to sail or learn the sport of sailing. We have been sailing in Mexico for 22 years now. The Sonoran Sport Center is the only American Sailing Association (ASA) affiliate in the Sea of Cortes. We offer four levels of ASA sailing certifications and Padi scuba diving certifications up to dive master. We are the only bareboat charter service in the Sea of Cortez north of La Paz. San Carlos is a small resort community located in the state of Sonora, Mexico, 300 miles due south of Tucson Arizona. Click here for map. I believe there is no better way to learn to sail than while on vacation in the Sea of Cortez, sometimes called the Gulf of California or if you go back far enough the Vermillion Sea. Twenty two species of marine mammals inhabit the Sea of Cortez with 17 of those species migrating through the San Carlos area at one time or another. For sailors the area offers secluded desert anchorages with beautiful oasis like canyons and many fresh water springs to hike. All instructional charters come with kayaks for exploring the deserted beaches and numerous sea caves found here. Whether taking one of our local day sailing or live aboard sail packages, a learn to sail vacation in the Sea of Cortez offer you the best combination of a boating and nature experience available. There are no schools on the east or the west coast of America or in Mexico for that matter that can offer you the ability to sail a multihull or monohull and cruise the Sea of Cortez at the same time! Many of my students have gone on to buy their own boats now and are actively sailing in many parts of the world! Several of our Students have decided to join oursailing club until they are ready to buy their own boat. It is a little hard to get to San Carlos but well worth the extra effort.
