Molly Brown: A Jim Brown 39

Molly Brown: A Jim Brown 39

At the end of the year 2013 and into the first of 2014, we gave some private instruction to the new owners of a Jim Brown 39 called Molly Brown. The boat had been recently purchased and the new owners were not familiar with sailing a trimaran so we had three nice days of sailing on the Molly Brown. One thing I especially liked about Molly Brown was the quick release cutter stay. In seconds you could pop the stay off to the side and sail the boat like a sloop for easy taking of the Jenny. The one thing I noticed right off the bat is that the guy who surveyed the boat, Gary Goldstein, made a critical mistake during the survey. He missed the fact that neither the head stay nor the cutter stay had it’s cotter pin in place. The head stay pin was about an 1/8 of an inch from popping out of its place. And on a Jim Brown rigged trimaran if you loose the head stay you loose the whole rig. I noticed the lack of a cotter pin while we were sailing and we immediately dropped the sails and motored back to the marina and didn’t take the boat out again until the head stay was properly attached to the stem fitting.

Of course we found the local population of bottle nose dolphins!! Thanks for the great sailing guys I was very impressed with the way the Jim Brown sailed!!!

Seamus Olivia Liam & Jordan: Discovery Sailing Course

Big Wind and Big Waves for my spear fishing buddy Seamus and his Son and Daughter Liam and Olivia  and Cousin Jordan. The kids did really well, Liam got the hang of steering the boat quickly and Olivia did well on the inside of the bay out of the 5 to 6 foot swells we had on the outside! Jordan was a little green for part of the trip. All in all it was a nice sail and it was hootin on the outside 20 plus knots and big deep swells.

Sandia our 32 Ericcson is ready for 2013-14 Sailing Season

Sandia our 32 Ericcson is ready for 2013-14 Sailing Season

Sandia has a new bottom job, a new rudder post and most of all brand new standing rigging so she is ready for to sail. I will post a few pictures of her latter on today. I also took the time to move her mooring buoy a little closer to the marina. Actually the boat is now the very first boat you pass when you leave the Marina San Carlos and turn into the channel!

Kelly finishes 114 Cruising Catamaran

Kelly finishes 114 Cruising Catamaran

Kelly the nomad just finished a 7 day Cruising Catamaran course now she is off to Texas then Germany then god knows where but I do see a catamaran in her future. Now Kelly assures me that she did not sacrifice any small animals before she came to San Carlos but I am not so sure since she had 7 days of wind. Almost unheard of for May conditions. Albeit the last two days were light wind days non the less we did have 7 days of wind and were able to sail every single day.

The first two days we had very nice north westerly winds followed by decent southerly winds the rest of the week so Kelly the wind goddess is now officially certifiable ahhhh I mean certified!!!!

Congrats Kelly!!!

Lucy & Clark from Colorado an Incredible dolphin day!!

Lucy & Clark from Colorado an Incredible dolphin day!!

Well this is day two of a seven day course and it was one of the best dolphin sailing days ever in San Carlos. And I don’t say that lightly. I have lived here for 23 years and you don’t get that many days like this. So Ron, Lucy and Clark were very lucky today. Credit the photos to Ron Brown one of my students down from Hermosillo who had his big big lens with him. Thanks Ron for the killer photos!!!!

Milly from Flagstaff had three perfect days in February!

Milly from Flagstaff had three perfect days in February!

Originally hailing from Switzerland  Milly is an accomplished silversmith who lives in Flagstaff Arizona and did her basic keel boat 101 course with us during February during three great days of wind, not to much and not to little, just the right amount!! Thanks for coming down Milly!

Preparing to leave Loreto back to San Carlos

Preparing to leave Loreto back to San Carlos

Odds are we might get a light south wind tomorrow so we will be heading for home very soon and will be back in San Carlos in a few days!!!!

I don’t know what it is about Isla Coronado in the Loreto Bay Marine Park but the sunrises and sunsets are some of the most dramatic I have ever seen in the Sea of Cortes!!!

Steve & Brenda from B.C.

Steve & Brenda from B.C.

Just finished one of our best Cruising Multihull courses with Steve and Brenda from British Columbia. We did this course in the Loreto Bay Marine Park which lies about  109 nautical miles almost due south of San Carlos. I have so many great pictures for this course it will be hard to post them all. During the trip we encountered Jumping Mantas and Spy Hopping Dolphins at isla Coronado and while anchored at Ballandra on isla Carmen I viewed the best meteor shower I have ever seen in my whole life!!!

Fishing was excellent on this trip we landed skip jacks, sierras, yellow tail and almost landed a 15 plus pound dorado in the clear 73 degree water that we sailed in. Here a just a few pictures of the trip. When I get back to San Carlos I will put up another post on our great hike on isla Carmen as well!!!

Below are just a few pictures

Excellent Sail from San Carlos to Loreto

Excellent Sail from San Carlos to Loreto

We left San Carlos on the 5th of December in the afternoon around 3 p.m. and averaged 6 knots on our way to isla Coronado, the northern most island in the Bay of Loreto Marine Park. We sailed over 60 miles before the wind died on us and thus had to crank up the Kamakazi, divine wind, 38 horse power yanmar. The Windsplitter handled like a dream and I used no atuopilot on the trip over during the sail and never touched the helm. The boat balanced perfectly in the 3 to 4 foot beam seas so we simply trimmed the sails locked the helm and had a few cold Noche Buena cervezas, the best bear in Mexico, as we cruised off into the sunsett. We even caught up to a monohull that had left san carlos a good hour before we did. Nothing like a trimaran on a reach!!!!!

Jon & Laura Sailing the Vermillion Sea

Jon & Laura Sailing the Vermillion Sea

Finished up a 101 ASA basic Keel boat class today with Jon and Laura from Tucson. Jon is a private pilot so teaching an ASA 101 for those guys is as we say in Spanish, Pan Comido, a piece of cake. I forgot my camera today but Jon just sent me these pics. We found the local pod of bottle nose dolphins in front of the Posada today and they hung on the bow wave for several passes and then of course the red algae was wild looking. Winds were around 10 to 13 knots as predicted so it was a damn nice day out there. Thanks to Jon and Laura for taking the course!!!

I really love the Red Algal Bloom shots that Jon took today, some of the images remind me of a shot you might get from the Hubble Space Telescope of a gaseous nebula thousands of light years away. We should not forget that the first real European name for the Gulf of California came from Cortes. He called it the Vermillion Sea because of these red algal blooms.
